This is Aoshima's 1/32 model
of the Hayabusa asteroid mapping/sampling satellite launched by
the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in May of 2003. It
returned to Earth in June of 2010 with samples it had collected from
the Itokawa asteroid that it had landed on during its journey.
The entire model was cast in dark grey plastic. I used a combination of
Alclad Chrome, Tamiya, Gunze Mr. Color, and games workshop paints for
detailing. I then wrapped the center body in gold leaf foil to match
the original satellite. The supports for the dish were replaced with
1/32 brass tube. The base is an aftermarket Kotobukiya base that was
washed with various Games Workshop paints and oil pastel.
